What to Expect Before and After Your First Adjustment

If you’ve never been to a Chiropractor before, you may be wondering what to expect during your first visit. First off, we’d like to thank you for putting your health first and deciding to give Chiropractic care a try! We bet you’re going to love the results, gentle techniques, and natural wellness.

Here are a few things you can expect before, during, and after your first visit with us.

On your new patient visit, expect to be greeted warmly by our experienced competent staff. Our doctors are very careful in what they do, so first they will need to determine if you are a good candidate for Chiropractic care. The doctor will begin with a consultation asking you very specific questions about your medical history and any current pain or symptoms. This helps us best understand your problem areas and why you’re seeking care as well as set goals for your care with us. Next the doctor will perform a physical examination including orthopedic and neurological testing to help determine the best possible way to care for you. If necessary, they will take weight bearing digital X-rays during your appointment. The doctor will need some time to carefully review all of the information they have gathered to make the proper diagnosis as to what is causing your issue and come up with the best plan of action to correct that. Our front desk staff will schedule you for a Report of Findings at your earliest convenience and the doctor provide you with some home care instructions to help out in the meantime.

On your second visit, the doctor will sit down with you and go over their findings and recommendations then answer any questions you may have. Next comes your adjustment, which will be entirely custom to what your body needs based on what we found in your previous visit. We’re proud to be able to utilize and provide a variety of techniques dependent on what will work best for you. We want you to know that most adjustments with us are entirely comfortable and gentle. If you’re nervous about receiving an adjustment, let us know and we’ll do our best to walk you through the entire process so there are never any surprises. While not everyone does, if you hear a ‘popping’ sound, that’s entirely normal. It is simply air being released from the joint capsule as we align you. The goal of an adjustment is to restore balance and optimal alignment to your spine and proper nerve supply to your body so that you feel and function at your best.

After the adjustment, most people feel great! Some patients may feel soreness in the adjusted area much like after trying a new exercise, but this will likely dissipate over the coming hours and days. If you don’t start to feel improvement right away, that is entirely normal too. Remember, it likely took time for your body to get to this point so please be patient with your body as you heal. We hope you’ll notice that you feel more relaxed and have less muscle tension. We typically recommend making sure that you stay hydrated, as this is always beneficial for your health. Of course for best results it is also important to follow the doctor’s recommended care frequency and any at home care instructions they provide throughout your care.
