Questions and Answers

Q:  What is Chiropractic?

A:  Chiropractic is a system of health care based upon the relationship between the spine and the nervous system and how it affects overall health. Since the nerves control all of the body's functions, correcting spinal alignment is crucial for optimum function and overall health of the body. Chiropractic does not use drugs, needles or surgery. Chiropractic is designed to correct the underlying cause of health problems instead of masking symptoms.

Q:  What does a Chiropractor do?

A:  A Chiropractor, or doctor of chiropractic, examines the spine for subluxation. Subluxation is when a spinal bone has shifted out of its normal alignment resulting in nerve pressure. Subluxation can be caused by a trauma such as a car accident or a fall, but more frequently is due to the cumulative effect of long periods of poor posture and ergonomics. Although pain can occur immediately with subluxation, more often pain and other health problems develop slowly over time. Since subluxation is a structural displacement (e.g., actual bones not where they should be), it cannot be corrected with drugs or needles. For example, misaligned teeth get braces, not drugs. A chiropractor corrects subluxation with an adjustment, realigning the bone and removing the spinal nerve stress.

Q:  How do we get spinal nerve stress (subluxations)?

A:  From stress.  It may occur in infancy from a difficult childbirth or from childhood falls.  Later in life, emotional tension or stress can gradually damage your spine, and violent injuries from automobile accidents or sports can suddenly "knock you out of wack."

Q:  Who gets subluxations?

A:  Nearly everyone gets spinal nerve stress.  It is a "hidden epidemic" and it is the reason we all need to have our spines checked by a doctor of chiropractic every once in a while, just as we get our eyes, teeth, and blood pressure checked.

Q:  What can I expect on my first visit to the Chiropractor?

A:  At the first visit, Dr. Tagliarini takes a thorough health history and conducts an examination. The exam includes an orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic evaluation as well as spinal x-rays, if necessary. An adjustment is not typically part of the first visit as it's important for the doctors to review your x-rays and correlate them with notes from your examination.  A second appointment is then scheduled to discuss a report of findings. At that time, Dr. Tagliarini reviews the exam and x-ray findings, provides treatment recommendations, answers questions, explains payment options, and performs the first treatment.

Q:  What is a typical office visit like?

A:  Each appointment begins with a session in a therapy room. Then Dr. Tagliarini assesses the spine for subluxation and performs specific spinal adjustments to correct the subluxations. Correcting the underlying cause of symptoms mitigates or eliminates the symptoms and enhances the health potential of the body.

Q:  Why should children be checked by a chiropractor for subluxations?

A:  The first subluxation usually occurs at birth when 50-90 pounds of pressure are used to pull the baby out of the birth canal. As children learn to sit, crawl, stand, walk, ride bikes, and play sports, their spines endure many more subluxations from common bumps and falls. The cumulative result is the back pain we have as adults. Chiropractic care prevents these layers of damage that occur over a lifetime. All children should have their spines checked for subluxation – Chiropractors are the only health professionals trained to evaluate for and treat subluxation. Our children deserve to grow up with healthy spines.

Q:  When was the first Chiropractic patient treated?

A:  Modern Chiropractic began in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first Chiropractic "spinal adjustment" on his deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard.  Lillard's hearing returned and Palmer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness.  But as patients with digestive problems, sciatica, menstrual problems, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain, and many other health conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.

Q: Assuming I'm going to take Chiropractic treatments, how are they performed?

A:  Chiropractors have years of highly specialized training in order to locate where misplaced spinal vertebrae are impinging the nerves which travel down the spinal cord and out through the spinal column to the muscles, organs, and glands of the body.  After locating the vertebrae impinging the nerves (subluxations), the Chiropractor, using various highly specialized techniques, is able to re-align the misplaced vertebrae and thus release pressure on the nerves.  This is called a spinal adjustment. There are over 200 techniques in Chiropractic. Dr. Tagliarini uses only the most comfortable, safe, effective techniques.

Q:  What are some of the conditions commonly helped by Chiropractic?

A:  All kinds of conditions are treated with chiropractic care – everything from colds or ear infections, PMS, spinal or disc problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, vision problems, headaches, allergies, bedwetting, colic, high blood pressure – the list is long!  And yet, please remember, the goal of Chiropractic treatment is not the treatment of the disease, but rather the enhancement of health through the reduction of spinal nerve stress.

The above list may seem as long as though Chiropractic were a Panacea.  The truth is that most textbooks list over 200 diseases.  Please be mindful of the fact that Chiropractic care is not like one drug used for one condition, but on the contrary, it is a complete healing art within itself, concerned with the systems of the body such as nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc., and seeks to correct spinal health problems within those systems.

Q:  Can I receive Chiropractic treatments if I'm under medical care?

A:  Absolutely, patients can always have their spines checked for subluxation by a Chiropractor and still receive care from their medical doctor. Spinal nerve stress should be corrected no matter what type of care a person is receiving.

Q:  In Chiropractic are there other significant factors besides vertebral adjusting?

A:  Yes, there are five laws to obey for those who desire health & longevity:  1) Proper nutrition; 2) Adequate rest; 3) Moderate exercise; 4) A positive mental attitude; 5) Proper nerve supply.
